Facchina Construction of Florida is pleased to announce that temporary certificate of occupancy was received on the New World Symphony Campus Expansion project on October 29, 2010, right on schedule. Bringing to life renowned architect, Frank Gehry, and the New World Symphony’s vision, dream and design has not been easy. The nearly finished project is already producing rave reviews from around the world and is destined to become a world-class cultural destination. Located in the heart of beautiful Miami Beach, this new campus is a music lab for classical music education to prepare highly gifted students for careers in orchestras and ensembles around the world.
Facchina’s contract included the construction of a new 6-story, 757 variable seating performance hall, a digital music library, 26 individual rehearsal rooms, six ensemble rehearsal rooms and a multi-purpose room all outfitted with Internet 2 technology. The project also included fellow changing rooms, administrative offices and over 100 instrument lockers. The east façade of the building showcases a glass curtain wall allowing passersby a glimpse of the inside architecture and a projection wall on which live concerts, master classes, large-scale images and films can be viewed from a new 2.5 acre park that is located adjacent to the campus that is free and open to the public. Facchina also constructed a new 6-story, 200,000 s/f parking garage simultaneously with the new campus which features 550 parking spaces as well as retail.
This is Frank Gehry’s first project in Florida and is a symmetric mix of extremely complex and yet very simple design. While the exterior of the building is, in large part, a simple white stucco box, the interior is extremely complex with curved surfaces forming the various elements that house the ensemble rehearsal studios, the multi-purpose room, and the performance hall. A prime consideration in the design and the construction was the acoustics for all of the rooms in the building. It was imperative that each rehearsal and performance area be acoustically correct both for the sound within the room and also to not allow any outside noises to penetrate into the rehearsal and performance areas. Since this is primarily a teaching facility, it is extremely high tech. All of the rehearsal areas are connected to a system known as “Internet 2″. The Internet 2 system allows the students to receive instruction from conductors, other performers, or other instructors located around the world.
On January 14th, the New World Symphony hosted a “Friends and Family” night to honor and thank the workers that built the new campus. Those in attendance were treated to a one-hour rehearsal in the new auditorium. Rehearsals will be on-going in anticipation of the Opening Week concerts and festivities scheduled to begin January 25th.
The new campus project is receiving world-wide acclaim and is being featured in media outlets and publications throughout the U.S. Engineering News Record’s December 27th, 2010 edition featured a cover and 7-page in-depth article on the project and the complex building process (to view go to www.enr.com). The January 23rd issue of the Miami Herald also contained a supplemental pull-out section featuring everything about the New World Symphony and its exciting new campus.
Jesus Vazquez, President of FCF, says “we are extremely proud of this accomplishment of receiving TCO and are grateful to all those involved in helping us to achieve this significant milestone. We could not have gotten the project this far without the tremendous hard work and cooperation of the entire OAC team, including our staff, subcontractors, vendors, county and city officials and inspectors. Our focus needs to continue on achieving final completion of the project”.
