The Capitol Visitors Center project encompasses 580,000 SF, including 170,000 SF for House and Senate expansion space, and is located underground below the East Front Plaza. Facchina was contracted by Centex Corporation to construct the three-level, sub-grade reinforced concrete structure in 2002. Working closely with the owner/contractor, Facchina began framing and pouring concrete caps atop newly constructed 2,100 linear feet of slurry walls in November 2002. The scope included placing more than 51,000 CY of concrete as a top-down construction method. Two significant problems faced during this project include high levels of security and coordinating projects in a tight space. Facchina was recognized for their work on the project, receiving the Washington Building Congress Award. Once complete, the Capitol Visitors Center will provide security, education, and convenience for its more than three million annual visitors.
