The 11th Street Bridge project reconstructs and reconfigures the interchange of the Southeast/Southwest Freeway and Anacostia Freeway.  Interstates I-295 and I-695 are rebuilt to provide missing traffic movements, more capacity, and a safer roadway.  11th Street is rebuilt in order to provide a local, gateway  connection, over the Anacostia River, between Downtown Washington and the underserved Anacostia neighborhood. 

Facchina is building the project in a Joint Venture with Skanska titled the Skanska-Facchina JV.  The new work includes seventeen new bridges, three of which are 1,000’ long crossings of the Anacostia River.  Sixteen lane-miles of new pavement for interstate, ramps, and local roadways are constructed.  Seven lane-miles of existing roads are milled and overlaid.  Tracks and catenary poles are installed on 11th Street as part of a new Washington trolley car system. 

There is 200,000CY of excavation and 400,000CY of fill required for the project.  Some dredging of the Anacostia River and properly disposing of contaminated materials is required.  Approximately twelve existing bridges are being demolished.  Some existing poor ground conditions require wick drains and surcharge or geopiles in order to solve excessive settlement conditions.

The JV provided the best-value design to DDOT which was most innovative and efficient in meeting their project goals.
